Between The Capes Red | Billboard Monochromatic

Between The Capes Red | Billboard Monochromatic

Hand-sprayed mixed media on reclaimed billboard original by Rich Simmons.

Challenging perceptions of masculinity, sexuality and heroism, Pop Punk artist Rich Simmons places Superman and Batman – two of the most iconic alpha male figures in popular culture – into an intimate embrace. The artwork asks whether we should define a hero by their actions rather than their lifestyle choices, as the capes wrap around them like a shield, symbolising both protection and vulnerability. For the artist, this work is about breaking down stereotypes and reminding us that strength comes in many forms.

Created on reclaimed billboard paper once used for public advertising displays, the artist soaked 20-30 layers, pulling them apart to find hidden colours and textures to feature in the background of the artwork before pasting it on to a canvas.

The rips, the halftone dots and graphics make each piece unique and plays on the street art inspiration behind the artist’s work – truly bringing the outside in.
