1-2-3, 1-2-3

‘1-2-3, 1-2-3’ depicts a dancer with five legs. Inspired by country and Latin dancing, Billy has created a sense of dynamism in the figure by using vibrant colours and intricate, scale-like details.

“This is a dance come to life. It’s a Latin dance, like salsa or a bachata or merengue. I always think you need more than two legs to do a good dance, probably four. But to be a hootchy-cootchy dancer you need five.” Billy’s use of blue in this piece is inspired by the traditional Navajo jewellery crafted with turquoise.

Part of his Born on a Rainy Day - Early Drawings collection, Billy rediscovered this work while sorting through a cupboard in his house in Gozo, Malta. He says, “I’ve no idea why it’s a great favourite of mine. I keep going back to it. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever done, and that alone makes it appeal to me.”
