His use of colour is rare and exciting as can be seen in his masterpiece where tones of blue and purple invigorate the scene and compliment the couple walking across the bridge with their red umbrella, as well as the artist's red hat. This tranquil landscape also functions as a self-portrait; a portrayal of how he the artist sees himself and his work much like the famous artist portraits of Velázquez's 'Les Meninas' and Jan Van Eyck's 'Arnolfini Portrait'.
