Flayed Angel

Inspired by a Victorian image he once saw, Gary James McQueen created his ‘Flayed Angel’. Almost grotesque at first glance, the back of the angel is open, exposing a solid gold spine and ribs within, suggesting inner strength. The shape that is left on the angel’s back is reminiscent of the jacket of an old-fashioned military uniform. The ‘Flayed Angel’ is an image that the artist finds himself returning to, most recently recreating it as a three-dimensional statue to be viewed in virtual reality.
