Flanders Blues

Flanders Blues

Shifting in time from the real-life reign of the Peaky Blinders in the late 19th century and early 1900s to the drama-filled scenes World War I and Prohibition, Jon Jones has explored a range of themes in this sombre giclée on boxed canvas.

Named after the 1920s slang for shell-shock which soldiers experienced after the First World War, this hand-varnished giclée on boxed canvas also represents the many returning soldiers who joined criminal gangs because there were few jobs and they had become so used to violence.

The monochromatic tones and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow in this piece mirror historical photographs from archives which Jon sometimes draws his inspiration from. Framed in textured black radiata pine, the shadowy atmosphere of this piece is also echoed across his Spring/Summer 2021 release; discover more here.
