Rama

Introducing a new dimension to his iconic animals, ‘Rama’ exhibits a leopard painted almost entirely in red tones. Oxley has made a change from his usual kaleidoscopic colour palette yet instils his usual level of incredible detail into this painting using black and white hues. The eyes of the leopard are in absolute focus, a stark contrast from the hallucinatory style of the rest of the painting.

With the continuous swirling lines and the limited red palette, Oxley precisely captures the essence of the animal in this original painting. Discovering that using one colour streamlined his work, he modified his approach to painting, finding the form of the big cat first before adding his signature drips. Oxley’s distinctive drip effect gives the leopard spots a liquid look, expressing the fluid movements of the animal on the canvas.
