Setting Forth
In a brand-new body of work, the wildlife British painter, Robert Oxley, takes inspiration from iconic 20th century paintings. Oxley’s interpretation sits at an experimental mood, and while the genre is distinct from his famous big cats’ artworks, the painter’s style shines through in the kaleidoscopic colour palette and expressive brushwork.
Born from the want of creating an animal exodus, Oxley’s ‘Setting Forth’ is inspired by Howson’s ‘Acheron’. Famous for his figurative art style and for portraying heroic figures, this Howson’s painting is inspired by Dante’s Inferno and Greek mythology, which intrigued Oxley. By switching people for animals, the artist changed the context and the meaning behind the artwork to a biblical story – the great flood, after the flood – portraying a boat full of animals leaving the arc to find their own place in the world.
