The Cuban Guitarist
Full of contrasting shades of yellow and blue, Stephen Roby's distinct style shines through in this original oil painting. The British artist mixes all of his colours (including black) from the three basic primary colours of red, yellow, and blue, and this meticulous process means each painting can take up to three months to complete. He also uses bold lines and shapes to draw the viewers eye across the composition and blur the boundary between human and architectural forms much like the first Cubism artists.
This particular piece was inspired by a performance that Stephen witnessed in Spain where he described a Cuban guitarist's instrument as larger than himself, perched in a corner of a vibrant bar. Discover our selection of Stephen Roby's debut artworks with Castle Fine Art here.
